Dial Up Internet Service
In the early years of the Internet, especially in the 1990s, a dial-up connection was the standard way to connect to the Internet.  However, due to slow speeds (a maximum of 56 Kbps), and the hassle of constantly disconnecting and then reconnecting to the ISP, dial-up service was eventually replaced by "broadband" connections, like DSL, T1 and coax cable Internet services, which offer speeds that are over 100 times faster than dial-up and provide an "always on" connection.

Dial-up Internet connections require the dedicated use of a telephone line- whereas broadband technologies provide Internet connectivity without disrupting telephone use.  Dial up is still a good option for rural, remote and secluded areas where broadband Internet is not available, as well as for very tight budgets in which saving money is more important than speed.
